Ukraine has adopted a framework climate law – we are starting to build our own climate agenda in sync with the EU countries, – Svitlana Grinchuk
On 8th of October, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the second reading government draft law No. 11310. 284 MPs voted in favor.
“In the law, we set a goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. We have also defined the architecture of climate governance in Ukraine, financial instruments for achieving climate goals, and taken into account the goals of the state climate policy in post-war recovery programs,” said Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
The document contains:
- strategic planning and practical steps to achieve climate neutrality;
- cross-sectoral nature of climate policy;
- monitoring of actions and steps to implement climate policy;
- systemic forecasting in the field of climate change;
- fulfillment of Ukraine’s international obligations.
According to Svitlana Grynchuk, we are now bringing our legislation even closer to the EU law. This is another argument in the negotiation process that Ukraine stands ready to join the EU and fulfills the conditions for receiving financial assistance under the Ukraine Facility.
“I am grateful to the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, Oleh Bondarenko, for advocating the document. I thank every MP who voted in favor of this decision. I thank the team of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and the entire environmental community for their active work on this draft law. Today, a very important page has been turned, and everything is just beginning,” said Svitlana Grynchuk.
