Ukraine’s climate policy in wartime: reality or ambition (high-level event)
08.12.2023
Climate change is the major challenge facing humanity in the long term, and countries have been jointly seeking solutions for decades. Russian military aggression has not only deepened the climate crisis, provoking additional millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions, but also complicated international negotiations, as it diverts countries’ attention from solving the complex tasks of keeping global temperature rise within 1.5°C, provoking food and energy crises. Fighting for its existence, Ukraine, with the support of its partners, continues to work on the implementation of green human-centered restoration of its territories, not only according to the principle of Build Back Better, but also within the framework of low-carbon development.
We are already committed to achieving climate neutrality on an equal footing with our partners in the EU, and therefore we are gradually introducing financial mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, namely the emissions trading system; building a climate governance architecture by launching the Ukrainian Climate Office; and are already raising standards and applying the best available technologies in the recovery of our bloodied but liberated territories.
