Green education in Ukraine

Green recovery, decarbonisation, development and improvement of climate policy effectiveness. All this is impossible without qualified and experienced specialists. That is why COP30 pays considerable attention to climate education.

Several events in the Ukrainian pavilion are dedicated to this topic. For example, the discussion ‘Green education: institutional future for the environment,’ in which participants discussed the creation of new opportunities to strengthen institutional capacity in the areas of environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and post-war ecological reconstruction of Ukraine.

The event also presented the concept of the ‘Green Academy’ — an institution that aims to focus on training highly qualified practitioners for Ukraine’s environmental sector. Such specialists will help implement policies in the areas of environmental management and green recovery and, in general, build a sustainable future.

Another event in the NDC Partnership pavilion was also dedicated to the Green Academy project. Participants in the discussion provided more details about the idea behind the institution and its prospects. In particular, they discussed who will be able to join the academy, how the training will take place, and where graduates of the institution will be able to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

One specialist trained at such an institution will be able to implement 2-3 climate projects that will attract up to $5 million in funding, according to the presentation. This will be a specialist capable of developing and implementing programmes for decarbonisation, energy efficiency improvement and the introduction of eco-friendly technologies in various sectors of the economy.

Training professionals in the field of environment and climate is particularly relevant for Ukraine due to the country’s international commitments, the need for green post-war recovery, and the shortage of specialists in many fields related to full-scale Russian aggression.
